Anarchy is....

Tuesday, 14 December 2010 ·

Anarchy means "without leaders", not "without order". Anarchism is the ideal that believes order can be achieved voluntarily without the intervention of the state, the government or any law enforcing institution. Anarchists are the people who believe in such an ideal.

Anarchists based their beliefs on the ground that the main culprits of chaos and injustice are the state. History has shown that states thrive on waging wars among other states, putting their own people against one another, and in the end making all individuals becomes more and more dependent on the state and lose their individual freedom.

Anarchists, therefore, cherish individual freedom above everything else. By believing in individual freedom, true anarchists must also build within themselves a sense of tolerance to respect others' individual freedom. Anarchists believe that all human beings are created equal and justice can only be achieved if all of them are equally free in every aspect of their life, including maximizing their potential, choosing their sex orientation, choosing their religion, etc.

Do anarchists condone the use of violence? In some cases, violence can be used as the last resort in the context to break free from tyranny, not in the context to enforce or to terror a group of individuals to succumb into a certain belief or principle.

There are, however, anarchists who opted not to use violence at all in fighting the tyranny of the government. These anarchists are known as pacifists, and they believe that non-violence resistance is as strong as violent ones.

Some of the famous pacifists in history include Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, and Leo Tolstoy.

Anarchism and its relation to democracy will be discussed in later writings....
